Jeremiah 35:1 The wilderness and the wasteland shall be glad for them, And the desert shall rejoice and blossom as the rose . . .
In September of 1867, Mark Twain visited the Holy Land, and he noted the Land as desolate and devoid of inhabitants. In fact, He rode on horseback through the Jezreel Valley, and he observed, “There is not a solitary village throughout its whole extent – not for 30 miles in either direction. There are two or three small clusters of Bedouin tents, but not a single permanent habitation. One may ride ten miles, hereabouts, and not see 10 human beings.”
Eighty years later in 1947, when U.S. President Harry S. Truman was wrestling over Israel becoming an independent nation, he always read a quote sitting on his desk which read the following, “Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest.” These were words penned by the author Mark Twain, whose original given name is Samuel Clemens. Samuel means ‘God has heard’ and Clemens means ‘was about to show them mercy.’ So, we are looking at a given name meaning “God has heard and was about to show them mercy.” Is this a coincidence that the most popular writer in American history was a prophetic writer for the forthcoming State of Israel through the United States President? I think not!
After Israel declared its statehood in 1948, it was instantly invaded by Egypt, Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, and Jordan. With a fledgling army of 60,000 and less than 19,000 were fully armed, but somehow Israel prevailed. This was one of many miracles that sustained Israel and it soon began to flourish in economy, tourism, innovation, and entrepreneurship which I wrote about last week in the How to Pray for Israel blog.
To this day Israel has had to defend itself from various terrorist groups, Hezbollah from the north in Lebanon, Hamas from the south in the Gaza Strip, as well as groups in Syria and Iran, etc.
The importance of the US-Israel relationship is now as critical as ever! Since the beginning of the American colonies, our land has been a haven for the Jews. We have more Jewish people in the United States than any other place on planet Earth except Israel. Our fight is their fight, and their fight is our fight. We give them military aid, and Israel gives the U.S. (us) technology and intelligence. This is critically important for our health as a nation, as we must bless Israel to be a blessed nation!
ISRAEL AT 75!
